چکیده

Numerical simulations are performed using a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow solver for a circulation control airfoil. 2D and 3D simulation results are compared to a circulation control wind tunnel test conducted at the NASA Langley Basic Aerodynamics Research Tunnel (BART). The RANS simulations are compared to a low blowing case with a jet momentum coefficient, Cμ, of 0.047 and a higher blowing case of 0.115. Three dimensional simulations of the model and tunnel walls show wall effects on the lift and airfoil surface pressures. These wall effects include a 4% decrease of the midspan sectional lift for the Cμ 0.115 blowing condition. Simulations comparing the performance of the Spalart Allmaras (SA) and Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence models are also made, showing the SST model compares best to the experimental data. A Rotational/Curvature Correction (RCC) to the turbulence model is also evaluated demonstrating an improvement in the CFD predictions.

Applicability of URANS and DES Simulations of Flow Past Rectangular Cylinders and Bridge Sections

This paper discusses the results of computational fluid dynamics simulations carried out for rectangular cylinders with various side ratios of interest for many civil engineering structures. A bridge deck of common cross-section geometry was also considered. Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations were solved in conjunction with either an eddy viscosity or a linearized explic...

Scientific Flow Field Simulation of Cruciform Missiles Through the Thin Layer Navier Stokes Equations

The thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved for two complete missile configurations on an IBM 3090-200 vectro-facility supercomputer. The conservation form of the three-dimensional equations, written in generalized coordinates, are finite differenced and solved on a body-fitted curvilinear grid system developed in conjunction with the flowfield solver. The numerical procedure is based on ...

LES of Partial Cavitation Around a 2D Plane-Convex Hydrofoil Large Eddy Simulation of Partial Cavitation Around a 2D Plane-Convex Hydrofoil

Investigations of attached partial cavitation are important because to prevent damages in hydrulic machinery and to reduce the costs. As expected computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods have been developed for more than 40 years to understand this phenomenon and to improve the machinery designs, as pumps and hydraulic turbines. However, cavitation appears at high Reynolds numbers, so that, t...

Elastomeric Actuators on Airfoils for Aerodynamic Control of Lift and Drag

This paper investigates and characterizes the aerodynamic performance of a unique platform of airfoils with inflatable, elastomeric actuators. By controlling the inflation of stretchable and tough pneumatic bladders of silicone at specific locations of threedimensionally printed airfoils, experiments demonstrate it is possible to manipulate aerodynamic lift and drag. Measurements on morphable a...

Computational Study of Unsteady Flows around Dragonfly and Smooth Airfoils at Low Reynolds Numbers

A computational study was conducted to investigate the unsteady quasi-two-dimensional flow around a streamlined NASA low-speed GA(W)-1 airfoil and a corrugated dragonfly airfoil at the Reynolds numbers of 68,000 and 55,000. Both 2D and 3D simulations were carried out by solving the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations to predict the behavior of the unsteady flow structures around the airfoils at di...
